French Polynesia (i/ˈfrɛntʃ pɒlᵻˈniːʒə/; French: Polynésie française [pɔlinezi fʁɑ̃sɛz]; Tahitian: Pōrīnetia Farāni) is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic; collectivité d'outre-mer de la République française (COM), sometimes unofficially referred to as an overseas country; pays d'outre-mer (POM). It is composed of 118 geographically dispersed islands and atolls stretching over an expanse of more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) in the South Pacific Ocean. Its total land area is 4,167 square kilometres (1,609 sq mi).
French Polynesia is divided into 5 groups of islands: The Society Islands archipelago composed of the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands and the Austral Islands. Among its 118 islands and atolls, 67 are inhabited. Tahiti, which is located within the Society Islands, is the most populous island and the seat of the capital of the collectivity, Pape'ete. It has more than 68% of the population of the islands in 2012. Although not an integral part of its territory, Clipperton Island was administered from French Polynesia until 2007.
Tahiti (/təˈhiːti/; French pronunciation: [taˌiti]) is the largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia; this overseas collectivity of the French Republic is sometimes referred to as an overseas country. The island is located in the archipelago of the Society Islands in the central Southern Pacific Ocean, and is divided into two parts: The bigger, northwestern part Tahiti Nui and the smaller, southeastern part Tahiti Iti. The island was formed from volcanic activity and is high and mountainous with surrounding coral reefs. The population is 183,645 inhabitants (2012 census), making it the most populous island of French Polynesia and accounting for 68.5% of its total population.
Tahiti is the economic, cultural and political centre of French Polynesia. The capital of the collectivity, Pape'ete, is located on the northwest coast with the only international airport in the region, Fa'a'ā International Airport, situated 5 km (3.1 mi) from the town centre.
Tahiti was originally settled by Polynesians between 300 and 800 CE. They represent about 70% of the island's population with the rest made up of Europeans, Chinese and those of mixed heritage.
French may refer to:
Papeete (pronounced [pa.pe.ʔe.te]) is the capital of French Polynesia, an overseas country of France in the Pacific Ocean. The commune (municipality) of Papeete is located on the island of Tahiti, in the administrative subdivision of the Windward Islands, of which Papeete is the administrative capital. The French High Commissioner also resides in Papeete. It is the primary center of Tahitian and French Polynesian public and private governmental, commercial, industrial and financial services, the hub of French Polynesian tourism and a commonly used port of call. The Windward Islands are themselves part of the Society Islands. The name Papeete means "water from a basket".
The urban area of Papeete had a total population of 133,627 inhabitants at the August 2012 census, 25,769 of whom lived in the commune of Papeete proper.
The commune of Papeete is subdivided into eleven quartiers (wards):
The Pacific Ocean is the largest of the Earth's oceanic divisions. It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean (or, depending on definition, to Antarctica) in the south and is bounded by Asia and Australia in the west and the Americas in the east.
At 165.25 million square kilometers (63.8 million square miles) in area, this largest division of the World Ocean—and, in turn, the hydrosphere—covers about 46% of the Earth's water surface and about one-third of its total surface area, making it larger than all of the Earth's land area combined.
The equator subdivides it into the North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean, with two exceptions: the Galápagos and Gilbert Islands, while straddling the equator, are deemed wholly within the South Pacific. The Mariana Trench in the western North Pacific is the deepest point in the world, reaching a depth of 10,911 metres (35,797 ft).
The eastern Pacific Ocean was first sighted by Europeans in the early 16th century when Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama in 1513 and discovered the great "southern sea" which he named Mar del Sur. The ocean's current name was coined by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan during the Spanish circumnavigation of the world in 1521, as he encountered favourable winds on reaching the ocean. He called it Mar Pacifico, which in both Portuguese and Spanish means "peaceful sea".

Tahiti Queen of the Pacific The heart and soul of the South Pacific, Tahiti is the largest in a chain of islands that make up French Polynesia. In French Polynesia the jewel of the South Pacific Ocean is Tahiti, with it's 180 islands towering over the ocean like a royal Queen, crowned by a circle of majestic peaks. Our journey took us far out of the capital Papeete into another world and space - to Teahupo'o. Physically nothings changed since the 60ties, Tahiti remains paradise -- with friendly locals and turquoise warm water. But there's more than a challenging wave rolling over the coral reef -- it's the heaviest wave in the world -- and that's what waits at "the end of the road."
The mysterious Polynesian island jewel known as Tetiaroa is actually a 4.5 mile wide atoll comprised of 12 motus (small islands) and located just 36.5 miles (59 km) north of Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on the island of Tahiti. It is probably most famously known for its now deceased but legendary owner, the charasmatic and moody Hollywood actor, Marlon Brando, although relatively few travelers have ever visited the place. (In actuality, Marlon didn't ever really OWN the place, but rather was privy to a 99 year LEASE to it from the FP government.) Marlon Brando and Tarita TeripaiaInterestingly, Tetiaroa is still a rather pristine South Pacific getaway, having resisted tourism and development due to its private and exclusive ownership status over the years. Mandatory Credit: Eric Nelly Raffis Gay At least three people were injured and over 100 homes destroyed in the French Polynesian capital of Papeete, Sunday, after heavy flooding hit the South Pacific Island. Locals attempted to navigate high water levels by using makeshift rafts and canoes, as emergency services attempted to rescue those stranded. Electricity was reportedly cut off to over six thousand houses, but has since been restored to many of the affected homes. Officials are attempting to resolve ongoing problems with local infrastructure, after landslides damaged major roads and flooding at the island's airport caused cancelations to international flights. It is expected that the rain will continue until Tuesday. Video ID: 20170123- 006 Video on Demand: http://www.ruptly.tv ...

This is where you are most likely to join a cruise ship cruising around French Polynesia and have some time between joining and leaving the ship. All stills here are available for lease in RAW and JPG formats. Shot in January, February, March 2015. This video is intended to show you what to expect in Papeete. It's not promoting Tahiti ... though I think you really should go .... many people will never go to Tahiti, but they may wonder what it's like .... that is what this video is intended to illustrate

Narrated by actor Alan Caillou, also known as Alan Samuel Lyle-Smythe M.B.E., "O Tahiti Tele" was created by the Tahiti Tourist Development Board in 1972. It shows the natural beauty of French Polynesia with its abundant beaches, fishing, paradisiacal vistas, unspoiled jungles, coconut plantations, and strong and beautiful people. As the film points out, the arrival of jet aircraft as a means to travel, forever changed Tahiti from a remote dream for most people, to a reality visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists per year. Tahiti is the largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia; an overseas collectivity of the French Republic, sometimes referred to as an overseas country. The island is located in the archipelago of the Society Islands in the central Southern Pacif...
The waters off the Rangiroa Atoll in French Polynesia are home to an astonishing creature, a true survivor from an age when dinosaurs roamed the Earth around 400 million years ago: the great hammerhead shark. At up to 6 metres in length, they are imposing predators with an array of incredible sensory organs housed in their distinctive hammer-shaped heads. But there are still many unanswered questions about these mysterious creatures. Marine biologist Dr Johan Mourier of the University of Perpignan is dedicated to exploring the behaviour and genetic make-up of great hammerhead sharks to help preserve this endangered species in the wild. In the last 25 years alone, their world population has shrunk by about 80%. Yet very little is known about them. Dr Mourier wants to get to the bottom of ...

Vivero d...

French Polynesia (/ˈfrɛntʃ pɒlɨˈniːʒə/; French: Polynésie française, pronounced: [pɔlinezi fʁɑ̃sɛz]; Tahitian: Pōrīnetia Farāni) is an overseas country (pays d'outre-mer) of the French Republic. It is made up of several groups of Polynesian islands, the most famous island being Tahiti in the Society Islands group, which is also the most populous island and the seat of the capital of the territory (Papeetē).
